At OP Academy, we believe every child has the potential to grow stronger, more confident, and more focused through martial arts. For this reason, we especially tailor Taekwondo classes for kids who are new to learning. As a trusted provider of Taekwondo service for children in Singapore, we offer children a secure, caring, and enjoyable platform where they can learn about their potential and have fun learning. Whether it’s the very first class your child has ever been to or the beginning of a long Taekwondo path, we will be with them every step of the way. Here’s what you can expect from your child’s first Taekwondo class with us.

Step 1: Arrival and Warm Welcome
When you and your child arrive at the trial Taekwondo class, our welcoming staff will greet you and help you settle in. We are aware that the first day will be a mix of excitement and nerves for kids and parents alike, so we attempt to make everyone feel comfortable.
The kids will be taken through to the instructor, who will take them through what the lesson feels like and put them at ease. If your child has not had a chance to change yet, we’ll show them where to do so. For trial lessons, we recommend Taekwondo kids wear loose sportswear (e.g., a t-shirt and sweatpants). Your child, once enrolled, will be issued the formal uniform, which is referred to as a “dobok.”
Step 2: Warm-Up and Stretching
Every Taekwondo lesson starts with a lighthearted but structured warm-up. These will usually consist of light jogging, jumping jacks, and stretching. They’re meant to warm up the body and prepare the muscles for healthy exercise.
For most kids, this is their first experience with following group exercise directions—and it’s alright if it doesn’t actually “click” at first. Our trainers know how to teach young students and will go through each step slowly.
Step 3: Learning Basic Techniques
Next, your child will learn elementary, age-appropriate Taekwondo techniques. They may be basic stances, blocks, and light kicks. OP Academy always organizes every Taekwondo class according to the child’s age group and mastery level so that your child will not be confused.

For example, younger Taekwondo children (4–6 years) will study more about movement, balance, and motor skills, whereas older beginners can start to study basic self-defense techniques.
We always point out respect, discipline, and good form ahead of power or aggression. Our desire is to allow children to build firm foundations while enjoying themselves.
Step 4: Fun Drills and Team Games
We make sure our Taekwondo classes remain fun and engaging by incorporating games and drills. These enhance agility, listening, and team building. It’s a relay race or a balance test for the children, and they exercise without realizing it!
We catch kids smiling, helping each other, and growing more confident with every drill. These interactions make them bond with each other and feel like they’re part of something special.
Step 5: Closing with Respect and Support
At the end of every Taekwondo lesson, kids stand in line, bow to their instructor and fellow students, and reflect on what they have learned. It’s easy but a very effective ritual that teaches them respect, appreciation, and awareness.

We finish the lesson off with some cool-down exercises and positive reinforcement. We love celebrating small victories, whether a good kick or just good focus.
For the Parents: What You Can Do
We always welcome parents to the trial class. You’ll be able to observe how your child reacts, how our instructors interact with the students, and what the learning environment is like.
Some tips to make the first time pleasant:
- Come early: Allow your child to acclimatise and get familiar with the surroundings.
- Dress comfortably: Baggy, lightweight clothing is best for trial classes.
- Encourage without pressure: Let your child have the freedom to enjoy the experience without worrying about performance.
- Ask questions: Our instructors are happy to explain class structures, belt progressions, and training plans.
